At 26, Hon. Lesego Chombo Becomes Botswana’s Youngest Minister of Youth and Gender Affairs

In a historic shift towards youth representation and gender inclusivity, the Republic of Botswana has appointed 26-year-old Lesego Chombo as its new Minister of Youth and Gender Affairs. With a background as an admitted attorney of the High Court of Botswana, a member of Parliament, Miss World Africa 2024, and a former Miss Botswana (2022), Lesego’s journey from beauty queen to lawmaker is nothing short of inspiring.
Hon. Lesego Chombo’s appointment is a strategic move by President Duma Gideon Boko, who recently formed his administration, keen on reflecting a vision of progressive governance and youthful dynamism. In Lesego, Botswana sees the embodiment of what young, driven leaders can achieve when empowered. She brings an impressive academic background, holding a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Botswana, which she has effectively leveraged to advocate for justice and youth empowerment.
Her story reads like a modern-day fairy tale, yet it’s rooted in hard work, resilience, and purpose. Rising through the ranks of pageantry, Lesego used her platform as Miss Botswana and Miss World Africa to champion causes close to her heart—justice, youth education, and women’s empowerment. Today, she stands in a position that will allow her to further these commitments on a grander scale.
“As of today, I am blessed with a role that gives me a greater opportunity to serve young people and be part of the movement striving towards a new and better Botswana. I am grateful to be the incumbent minister of youth and gender affairs. All I have ever longed for was to make people’s lives better in all that I do,” she shared in her first public address after her appointment.
Hon. Lesego Chombo’s vision for Botswana’s youth is powerful. She seeks to cultivate a generation that values education, justice, and equal opportunity for both women and men. Her background as an attorney equips her to approach policy with an analytical and legally sound perspective, ensuring that every decision she makes is rooted in justice and equality.
As she steps into her role, the new minister faces a wide array of challenges and opportunities. With issues like youth unemployment, access to quality education, and gender-based violence on the table, she has her work cut out for her. However, her proven resilience and commitment make her an ideal fit to navigate and address these challenges.
Her appointment signifies hope and progress—not just for young women in Botswana but for the entire African continent. Hon. Lesego Chombo is a beacon of what can be achieved when young leaders are entrusted with power. At Legal Africa Magazine, we celebrate her achievements and extend our heartfelt congratulations as she embarks on this significant journey.
Hon. Lesego Chombo, congratulations on being a remarkable representation of Botswana’s future. May you continue to inspire, uplift, and lead by example as you serve the people of Botswana. The entire continent is watching and cheering you on.
