Africa Arbitration Academy: Shaping the Future of Arbitration in Africa
Authored by: Monica Kusi

The Africa Arbitration Academy (AAA) has positioned itself as a leader in transforming the legal framework of arbitration across Africa. Through its innovative programs, cutting-edge research, and high-level training, the Academy is empowering the next generation of arbitration practitioners and reinforcing Africa’s presence in the global dispute resolution arena.
Empowering Practitioners Through Flagship Training
At the heart of AAA’s work is its Flagship Training Programme, an intensive three-week course that provides arbitration practitioners with specialized knowledge and hands-on experience. Scheduled for 09 – 27 June 2025 in London, United Kingdom, this program attracts Africa’s top legal minds, equipping them with the tools necessary to navigate complex arbitration cases on an international scale. The program features world-class faculty, practical case studies, and opportunities for participants to engage with leading arbitration professionals.
Innovations Shaping Africa’s Legal Landscape
Beyond training, the Academy has spearheaded several key initiatives to advance Africa’s arbitration ecosystem:
- Model Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) for African States: Introduced in 2022, this treaty provides a balanced framework that attracts foreign investment while promoting sustainable development. Rooted in the African philosophy of Ubuntu, it ensures that investment agreements reflect the continent’s unique socio-economic priorities.
- Survey on Dispute Resolution Costs and Funding: This landmark study examined the financial constraints surrounding arbitration in Africa, highlighting the need for cost-efficient practices and alternative funding solutions such as third-party funding.
- Protocol on Virtual Hearings in Africa: Released in 2020, this guideline provided a structured approach to conducting arbitration hearings online, ensuring continuity during the COVID-19 pandemic and setting a precedent for digital arbitration proceedings.
Upcoming Executive Program on Investment Arbitration
In collaboration with the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), AAA is hosting the Executive Program on Investment Arbitration from 15 – 20 September 2025 at the ICSID Secretariat in Washington DC, United States.
This prestigious program is designed for in-house counsel and state representatives in Africa who seek to deepen their expertise in investment arbitration. The curriculum will offer practical insights, expert-led discussions, and interactive learning experiences tailored to the African context.

- In-depth sessions with leading experts in investment arbitration.
- Comprehensive modules on the latest developments and best practices.
