From Delivering Babies to Delivering Justice: The Remarkable Journey of Midwife-Turned-Lawyer Adelheid Babatz Nyarko London

By Dorcas Appiah-Boadu | Legal Africa Volunteer Team

In a story that defies convention and inspires a nation, Adelheid Babatz Nyarko London has gone from the maternity ward to the courtroom, becoming one of the newest members of the Ghana Bar. Once a dedicated midwife under the Ghana Health Service, Adelheid has now added “lawyer” to her name—an achievement that marks not just personal success, but a symbolic breakthrough in both the medical and legal professions.

On the proud day when 123 new lawyers were called to the Bar as part of the 2025 cohort, Adelheid stood out—not just for her smile, but for her story.

As the first female lawyer in my family and the first Ghana Health Service midwife to transition into legal practice, my journey represents a unique intersection of healthcare and law,” she shared.

Her path hasn’t been easy. Balancing long hospital shifts with intense legal studies, Adelheid faced obstacles that would have shaken the strongest of wills. At one point, illness threatened to derail her dreams. But she held on.

I got sick in school but never gave up,” she recalls. “My advice to anyone who wants to do law is to never stop or quit, no matter what. You can be whatever you want to be when there is a will and desire.”

With a heart trained in compassion and a mind sharpened by law, Adelheid is uniquely positioned to champion issues close to her roots: healthcare law, women’s rights, and social justice. Her background in midwifery and nursing has gifted her with invaluable skills—critical thinking, empathy, and the ability to communicate under pressure. Now, she brings these same strengths to courtrooms and consultation rooms alike.

In Ghana’s healthcare system, I saw firsthand how advocacy and law affect patient care and the rights of both workers and patients,” she explained. “That’s what lit the fire in me to become a legal voice for the voiceless.”

Adelheid’s journey is more than a career change. It is a testament to grit, purpose, and the power of reinvention. Her story reminds us that it’s never too late to chase a new dream—and that sometimes, the most powerful advocates come from unexpected places.

Congratulations, Lawyer Adelheid Babatz Nyarko London. Ghana—and every woman who dares to dream—is proud of you.
